Toronto Reference Library Renovation

A multi-phased renovation touching every facet of this landmark library.
Eastern completed a multi-phased renovation of the Toronto Reference Library to better serve the diverse needs of today’s Torontonians and to create a library for the future.
The library remained fully operational throughout the renovation, spanning three years. Eastern’s scope impacted nearly every facet of the library, spanning all six floors, requiring considerable planning in consultation with Library Facilities Managers and Operations personnel. Collections, galleries, and services remained accessible throughout construction by relocating library functions, resources, and collections where possible. In those instances where relocation was not feasible, Eastern sequenced tasks to allow public access during peak hours and/or phased the work to allow continued access to a smaller footprint in select areas, with services continuing uninterrupted. Major deliveries, complex tasks, or disruptive activities were scheduled off-hours.
With 280 staff and over 2,500 visitors attending the library on a daily basis, Eastern’s construction team was faced with the challenge of maximizing productivity and quality while minimizing disruptions to library operations and occupants. By collaborating with Toronto Reference Library and the Architect of Record, Moriyama & Teshima, the success of Eastern’s efforts are evident in the numbers; visits increased by more than 20% during the construction.
