Sustainability & Low Carbon Design

Eastern is a leader in sustainability and low carbon construction because we believe that reducing both operational and embodied carbon is a core objective for owners, occupants, society & local communities.
Drawing on 75 years of experience, Eastern is familiar with building high-performance buildings, envelope systems, efficient mechanical and electrical systems, and fabric first design strategies that reduce energy use & support electrification.
Our track record constructing high-performance, sustainable buildings and demonstrates our commitment to existing and emerging sustainable practices. We work collaboratively with design teams to coordinate air barrier continuity, thermal performance, and airtightness testing so that buildings perform as modeled, not just on paper.

Sustainable & low-carbon leaders
Eastern has delivered an impressive portfolio of certified sustainable projects, including LEED Platinum, LEED Gold, Net Zero Carbon, and WELL certified buildings. Notable examples include the LEED Platinum Evergreen building at the Brickworks, the $64.5 million OSSTF Headquarters designed to Net Zero Carbon standards with LEED Platinum certification and WELL strategies, the $50.4 million TRCA Headquarters targeting net zero and low carbon with LEED Platinum, and T3 Bayside, a LEED Gold mass timber office building.

Sustainable solutions
Eastern also understands the importance of material selection and construction methodology in lowering embodied carbon. We are experienced with mass timber and hybrid structures, as well as low carbon concrete mixes and responsible sourcing of materials and products. Our teams plan logistics to minimize waste, support reuse and recycling, and reduce construction related emissions where practical. We have achieved a companywide 95% waste reduction and mitigation rate.
Our ability to deliver high performance buildings starts with our people. Eastern has nearly 30 LEED Accredited Professionals along with a Sustainability Committee chaired by Executive Leadership, whose role is to simplify the certification process, research and remain up to date on current and emerging requirements and innovations, standardize project documentation, assist with setup of documentation for incoming sustainable projects, assist employees attaining relevant accreditation, and provide workshops for employees interested in learning more about site level sustainability.
Eastern brings practical knowledge of local codes, energy standards, utility incentive programs, and approval processes that affect low carbon design and construction. We engage early with owners, consultants, and authorities having jurisdiction to align design intent, budget, and constructability so that sustainable & low carbon buildings are delivered on time, within budget, and ready to operate efficiently for decades.
