MUJI Flagship Store Fit-Out Atrium on Bay

MUJI first arrived in Toronto in 2014, initially occupying 4,400 square feet at Atrium on Bay.
Experiencing exponential growth in North America, MUJI selected the Atrium on Bay location as the Canadian flagship store, working with Eastern Construction to undertake a bold expansion within a fully operational facility.
Today, MUJI Canada is the largest retail tenants at Atrium on Bay, occupying a two-storey space. The project resulted in the expansion of the existing flagship store footprint from 6,500 to over 20,000 sq. ft. Eastern Construction provides all fit-out services as well as the reconstruction of the existing curtain wall on the 2nd floor for the owner, H&R REIT, to accommodate the new two-storey MUJI storefront.
Key elements of the project included:
- Demolition of the ground and second floors
- Slab cutting and reinforcement for the escalator wells
- Surgical insertion of structural steel and pumped concrete to in-fill the existing 2nd floor atria opening
- New mechanical and electrical infrastructure
- Two new escalators
- New exterior curtain wall, soffit, roofing, parapet
- New masonry wall, drywall partitions, interior glazing including doors, handrails, skylight
Being a retail and commercial space, the team was challenged to manage expectations, tenants and trades alike, with respect to noise control, dust control, garbage removal, and access; a great deal of work was performed during the night shift. Delivery of the escalators was particularly challenging with few options for access and the need to maintain safe pedestrian and vehicular pathways.
