Profile
Modernizing a historic provincial court building.
The City of Hamilton contracted with Eastern Construction to modernize
a former municipal court after it had been vacated by its most recent
tenant, McMaster University.
The scope of work included:
- Phased selective demolition of the entire facility, protecting the
sensitive heritage fabric of the building - Retrofit of the existing heating / cooling plant to utilize hot water, replacing steam. The existing boilers, chillers, and cooling tower
were upgraded and interconnected with the existing District Energy
system - Provision of a modern Emergency Power Unit consisting of a
roof-mounted generator - Renovation of four floors to accommodate four courtrooms,
Ontario Municipal Board, Administration Area, Hearing Room,
Offices for the City of Hamilton’s Legal Services in addition to
offices for the Risk Management Division. - Demolition of floors three, four, and five to base building core and
shell standards for future tenants. - Upgrades to subgrade receiving area including the installation of
security systems and realignment of existing building infrastructure
to provide barrier-free access in the holding areas - Exterior work to the plaza surrounding the courthouse
including landscaping
