This project involved a major retrofit of the existing building, something of a first in Ontario. The bulk of the structure was left intact, with as much as 90 per cent of the original structure being preserved while the interior was gutted. The new facility was completely retrofitted with an updated envelope and new architectural finishes, elevator system, heating and cooling system, ventilation, sprinkler and fire standpipe system, underground services, electrical distribution, emergency backup, and fire alarm and communication/security systems. Victoria Village is now the most advanced long-term care facility in the province and includes 128 long-term beds and 57 life-lease housing units. A community activity centre was completed with a computer lab and woodworking shop, 19,000 sq. ft. of communal space, an adult day care centre, a courtyard café, therapeutic gardens, a library resource area and a banquet hall for special functions.
